“Architecture is the skillful, accurate and magnificent plays of volumes seen in light.” - Le Corbusier
The perception of space is directly connected to the way light interacts with it. What we see, what we experience and how we interpret the elements is affected by how light interacts with us and with the environment. Regarding architecture, in whatever dimension it can be analyzed, either as space, as material or as color, it is essentially dependent on the lighting situation that involves both the object and the observer.
Lighting, whether natural or artificial, can be used to create different themes within the same space. With suitable artificial lightning, a building can be made a true visual treat even in the absence of sunlight. Thus a space can be made to possess a different appearance at night in contrast with its appearance during day. This competition provokes the contestants to appreciate the effect that light has on a space and how different spaces are perceived in the presence and absence of daylight.
